Privacy policy

This policy explains what personal information StayDigest Travel Media Inc. collects through staydigest.com, why we collect it, what we do with it and how you can get it back or have it deleted. It is written to be read, not to be skipped.

Who we are

StayDigest Travel Media Inc., trading as StayDigest, publishes an independent digest of casino hotels in Canada at staydigest.com. We are a Canadian corporation based at 343 Preston Street, Suite 1100, Ottawa, ON K1S 1N4. Our Business Number is 736815204.

We are responsible for the personal information under our control. Questions about this policy, or about your information, go to [email protected] or to the postal address above.

The law we follow

We handle personal information in accordance with the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and its ten fair information principles: accountability, identifying purposes, consent, limiting collection, limiting use and disclosure, accuracy, safeguards, openness, individual access, and the right to challenge our compliance. Where a provincial privacy law applies instead, we follow that.

Commercial email is sent only in accordance with Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL), which means express opt-in consent and a working unsubscribe link in every message.

What we collect, and why

When you write to us

The contact form asks for your name, your email address, a subject and your message. We use them to answer you. That is the entire purpose, and we do not use contact details for marketing unless you separately opt in to the newsletter.

When you subscribe to the newsletter

We collect your email address and the fact that you consented, along with the date. We use it to send the monthly digest email and nothing else.

When you simply read the site

Our web server keeps standard access logs — IP address, date and time, the page requested, the referring page and your browser's user agent string. These are used to keep the site running and secure, and to produce aggregate statistics about which reviews get read. Logs are retained for 30 days and then deleted.

Cookies

Essential cookies remember your cookie choice and protect form submissions. Analytics cookies are set only if you agree, and marketing cookies only if you agree separately. Full detail, including how to change your mind, is in our cookie policy.

What we do not collect

We do not ask for financial information, identity documents, dates of birth or any gambling history, because we have no use for them. We do not operate a casino, take wagers, process payments or hold accounts of any kind. We do not build advertising profiles of readers, and we do not sell, rent or trade personal information to anyone, ever.

Consent

We collect personal information with your knowledge and consent. Sending us a message is consent to our using your details to reply. Ticking the newsletter box is separate, express consent to receive email, and leaving it unticked has no effect on anything else. You may withdraw consent at any time by writing to us or by using the unsubscribe link, subject to legal or contractual requirements and reasonable notice.

Who else sees it

Two categories of service provider process information on our behalf: the company that hosts this website in Canada, and the company that delivers our newsletter. Both act on our instructions, are bound by contract to protect the information and may not use it for their own purposes.

Beyond that we disclose personal information only where the law requires it — a court order, a warrant, or a legal obligation — or where it is necessary to protect our rights or somebody's safety. We do not disclose reader information to casinos, hotels or any other operator.

How long we keep it

• Contact form messages and replies: two years, then deleted.
• Newsletter subscription: until you unsubscribe, plus a record of the withdrawal so we do not email you again by mistake.
• Server access logs: 30 days.
• Cookie consent record: 180 days, after which you will be asked again.

Safeguards

The site is served over HTTPS. Access to the mailbox and the subscriber list is limited to the editorial staff who need it, protected by strong authentication. We keep the amount of personal information we hold deliberately small, on the basis that data we never collected cannot be lost.

Your rights

You may ask us to confirm what personal information we hold about you, to give you a copy of it, to correct anything inaccurate, or to delete it. Write to [email protected]. We answer within 30 days at the outside, and normally within a few working days. There is no charge.

If we cannot verify who you are, we may have to decline the request — that protection exists for you, not for us.

Children

This site is written for adults. Gambling is restricted to those 19 and over in most Canadian provinces and 18 and over in Alberta, Quebec and Manitoba, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has sent us information, tell us and we will delete it.

Links to other sites

Some pages link to provincial regulators, help lines and support organisations. Those sites have their own privacy practices and we are not responsible for them. We do not link to online gambling platforms of any kind.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes we will update the date at the top and, where the change is significant, note it on the site. The version in force is always the one published here.

Complaints

If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your information, tell us first — most things are resolved quickly. If you remain unsatisfied, you may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada at priv.gc.ca, or by telephone on 1-800-282-1376.
