Luxury casino hotels in Canada

Six properties whose rooms, spa and dining would earn their rate with no gaming floor in the building. Ranked on the hotel rather than the casino.

Luxury, in this category, means the hotel

Casino hotels have a habit of spending their budget where the gaming is and finishing the bedrooms in whatever is left. The properties on this page are the exceptions — places where the accommodation, the spa and at least one restaurant are the reason to book, and the casino floor is something you may or may not walk through on the way to dinner.

Two of them are attached to hotels run by international operators to their own standard, which is the simplest way for a casino property to get this right. Two more are provincially operated and quieter than any commercial equivalent. One is the largest and most expensive casino hotel in the country. The last is the smallest floor in this digest with the best address.

What none of them offer is a bargain. Peak-season rates at the top of this list run past $400 a night, and the seasonal swing in Niagara Falls is steeper than anywhere else in Canada. If value matters more than finish, the full ranking weighs it directly.

    A genuine destination hotel: 349 rooms, a large indoor-outdoor pool complex, a full spa and Le Baccara, the best restaurant attached to any casino in Canada. Ten minutes from Parliament Hill and quieter than anything in Ottawa itself.

    Two hotels stacked on one downtown block with a sixth-floor rooftop park between them. The Douglas is the better room and would be a good Vancouver hotel with no casino in the building at all.

    The most in-demand casino hotel rooms in the country. Standard rooms are large; the upper-floor suites and anything facing the Horseshoe Falls are where the rate goes, and once, at least, they are worth it.

What luxury does not buy

Better rooms, better food and better service do not change anything downstairs. The certified return of a slot machine, the rules printed on a blackjack table and the pockets on a roulette wheel are identical in a five-diamond property and a highway inn. Whatever a resort spends on marble, it recovers on the floor.
