Responsible gaming

Help lines, self-exclusion programmes and the warning signs worth taking seriously — collected in one place, for every province this digest covers.

Why this page exists

StayDigest writes about casino hotels as travel destinations. That means describing gaming floors honestly, and it also means being straightforward about the fact that gambling harms some of the people who do it. Both things are true at once, and a publication in this category that leaves the second one out is not being honest with its readers.

We do not run a casino, take bets or offer any form of gaming. What we can do is put the help in front of you without making you look for it: the provincial numbers, what self-exclusion actually involves, and the signs that are worth naming out loud.

Know your limits

The practical advice that survives contact with reality is short:

  • Decide the amount before you arrive. Take it in cash and leave the cards in the room. When it is gone, the evening's gaming is over — that is what the number was for.
  • Set a time as well as a sum. Casino floors are deliberately built without clocks or windows. A phone alarm is a blunt instrument and it works.
  • Never use money meant for something else. Rent, bills, savings and borrowed money are not a gaming budget under any circumstances.
  • Do not chase. Trying to win back a loss is the single most reliable way to turn a bad evening into a serious problem.
  • Keep it social. Gambling alone, in secret, or as a way of managing stress is a different activity from gambling as entertainment.
  • Take breaks. Eat dinner, see the show, go outside. Every property in this digest has more in it than the floor.

Signs worth taking seriously

Any one of these is reason enough to talk to somebody — a help line, a counsellor, or a person you trust:

  • Spending more than intended, repeatedly, despite deciding otherwise beforehand.
  • Returning to win back losses, or gambling with money that had another purpose.
  • Borrowing, selling things or hiding transactions in order to keep playing.
  • Lying about how much time or money has gone into it.
  • Restlessness or irritability when trying to cut down.
  • Gambling to escape stress, low mood, boredom or loneliness.
  • Damage to work, study, sleep or relationships — including arguments about money.
  • Finding that it has stopped being enjoyable and continuing anyway.

Gambling harm is not a question of character or intelligence, and it responds to treatment. Provincial services are free, confidential and staffed by people who have heard everything already.

Self-exclusion

How self-exclusion works in Canada

Every province with licensed casinos runs a self-exclusion programme. In outline they work the same way: you register with the provincial operator or regulator, choose a period — commonly six months, one year, three years or longer — and for that period you are barred from entering licensed gaming venues in the province. Registration is free, confidential, and does not require you to explain yourself to anybody.

What differs is administration. In Ontario the programme runs through the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation and covers all OLG-operated and licensed sites. In British Columbia, BCLC administers the Voluntary Self-Exclusion programme alongside its GameSense service. Alberta's programme runs through AGLC, Quebec's through Loto-Québec, Manitoba's through Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, and the Atlantic provinces through Atlantic Lottery and their provincial corporations. Saskatchewan operates through SaskGaming and SIGA.

Two practical points. Self-exclusion binds the property regardless of any loyalty tier, host relationship or VIP status you hold — it overrides all of it. And it is not a test of willpower: enrolment is designed to be easy to start and deliberately harder to reverse, which is the whole point of the mechanism.

To begin, speak to the responsible gambling desk on any casino floor in the province, or contact the provincial operator directly. The help lines above will also walk you through it.

Where StayDigest stands

StayDigest is an independent publication about casino hotels in Canada. We do not operate, own or manage any casino or gambling facility. We do not accept wagers, process deposits, host games, sell gambling products or link readers to online gambling of any kind. Nothing on this site is an inducement to gamble, and no page here promises, implies or suggests that anybody can win.

We publish reviews so that people deciding where to spend a weekend can decide well. Part of deciding well is knowing that every game on every floor described here is designed with a mathematical advantage to the house, that the advantage does not change with skill, timing, machine choice or persistence, and that the only sum you can be confident about is the one you decided on before you arrived.

If reading this page has made you think about your own gambling, that is worth acting on today rather than later. The numbers above are answered by people, free, and no part of the conversation reaches anybody else.
